Join us at Babylon cinema at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz for the film program "Amazonia – Three Moments of Cinematography", curated by filmmaker Mariana Lacerda, an Ecopol fellow at the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) Potsdam. As part of the II Amazon Week, organized by the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin, this program features three films that explore the impact of colonialism on the Brazilian Amazon from diverse perspectives helping to understand the complex challenges faced by this region and its people.
Film Lineup:
- September 16, 19:30: Amazonas – The Largest River in the World
A rediscovered silent documentary from the early 20th century providing an invaluable historical perspective on the Amazon River. This film will be accompanied by a live organ played by Anna Vavilkina. A Q&A will follow with Mariana Lacerda (fellow, RIFS), Cecília Oliveira (group leader Ecopol, RIFS), Artur Sgambatti Monteiro (ex-fellow RIFS, current Freie Universität Berlin), and Amy Leia McLachlan (-TBC- fellow, RIFS). - September 18, 20:00 (Saal 2): Iracema – An Amazonian Transaction
A powerful 1974 film that delves into the environmental and social repercussions of the Transamazonian Highway. - September 20, 20:00 (Saal 2): Serras da Desordem
A gripping 2006 film portraying the survival of an indigenous man after his family’s massacre.
