Workshop

Amazon of Rights: Global Ecojurisprudence in Times of Urgency

06.05.2025 - 07.05.2025
Start time:

Date: 6–7 May

Venue: RIFS Venue, Berlin

This interdisciplinary gathering will bring together scholars, practitioners, activists, and artists for two days of in-depth discussions and exchanges. The workshop will serve as a platform to shape contributions for an edited volume, one of the key outcomes of the project. Topics include the Amazon’s (neo)colonial constitution and its legal instruments, alternative ways of seeing Amazonian normativity, and future-oriented eco-jurisprudence.

The workshop will feature panels such as The Amazon’s Constitution, which examines how the Amazon is legally and politically framed, including debates on the rights of nature. Seeing the Amazon Otherwise explores alternative perspectives beyond dominant legal and ecological narratives, while Eco-Normativity for a Shared Future focuses on emerging frameworks and more-than-human legalities.

The Amazon of Rights project is a collaboration between La Trobe University, the University of Erfurt, and the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) in Germany, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. It is led by Dr. Cecilia Oliveira (RIFS), Prof. Luis Eslava (La Trobe), and Prof. Michael Riegner (Erfurt). The workshop is invitation-only.
