Headline: 3rd Geoengineering Model Intercomparison project (GeoMIP) meeting at the IASS

The IASS is hosting the 3rd Geoengineering Model Intercomparison project (geoMIP) meeting on the 15th and 16th of April. Geoengineering, or Climate engineering (CE), is generally understood as the intentional large-scale modification of the earth system to ameliorate some of the effects of climate change. GeoMIP is a modeling project that is investigating sunlight-reflecting CE schemes using some of the latest generation climate models. The output from the GeoMIP project will contribute to a small section on climate engineering that will appear in the upcoming 5th Assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

At this 3rd GeoMIP meeting the first major results from all the groups will be discussed prior to a special GeoMIP issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres. The future of the GeoMIP project will be discussed as well as ways to get the most out of the existing data. In addition to the scientific discussion of climate engineering there will be a session with presentations from the interdisciplinary Climate Engineering microcosm of the IASS. This interdisciplinary discussion will focus on how to make the best use of the expertise and output of the GeoMIP project to inform social science research and policy.

On the evening of the 16th of April there will also be a panel discussion of climate engineering with experts from the GeoMIP project and the CE microcosm of the IASS, chaired by Mark Lawrence: “Mind the Gap – Climate Engineering between Models and Reality”.
