Headline: IASS “Resource Expedition” on the MS Wissenschaft

30. Mai 2012. The exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft – Future-Project Earth was launched on a tour through 36 cities in Germany and Austria on May 30th. The ship, a 2012 year of science project by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, offers school children and families a fascinating glimpse into sustainable development research. The onboard gallery included a contribution by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS). In collaboration with the Wupertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, the IASS presented “Expedition Resource'” an installation that draws observers’ attention to the issue of the enormous amount of recyclable material contained in cell phones.

Federal Minister of Research Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan launched the MS Wissenschaft, a converted freight transport ship offering an exhibition surface of about 600 square meters. She then viewed “Expedition Resource” herself. The installation vivifies the valuable resources contained within the individual parts of a cell phone, the origin of each material, and how the materials can be recycled. Dealing with cell phones in a more sustainable way is necessary; after all, around 83 million of them are lying unused in Germany’s desk drawers.
“Expedition Resource” was conceived by the IASS platform “Enabling Technologies for Sustainability,” together with the Wuppertal Institute. It presents one aspect of the research and communication project examining the recovery and use of used mobile phones, within the framework of “Year of Science 2012 – Future Project Earth.“
