Headline: Prof. Rubbia discusses the “future of energy” at the annual Heilborn Lectures

IASS Scientific Director and Nobel Laureate Prof. Carlo Rubbia is this year’s distinguished lecturer for the Heilborn Lectures, an academic event organized annually by the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Northwestern University, Chicago.

From April 15th to April 19th 2013, Prof. Rubbia discussed key topics in the field of particle physics, while his closing lecture, themed “The Future of Energy”, took a broader look at the challenges facing our current energy systems in the context of global warming. On this occasion, Prof. Rubbia presented the IASS approach on sustainability studies as well as the research activities of the Earth, Energy and Environment (E3) Cluster. In particular, Prof. Rubbia outlined the climate change mitigation potential of a "methane-based society" relying on low-carbon innovative technologies such as methane cracking and the recovery of CO2 for the production of methanol.

Guest speakers at previous Heilborn Lectures include several Nobel Laureates and world-renowned scientists in the fields of physics, energy and astronomy.
