The German energy transition, the Energiewende, is a collective project involving the society as a whole. It also has important implications for the neighbouring countries. In spite of all their regional differences, Germany and the five Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden share similar goals and challenges in their energy policies – there are ample opportunities for mutual profit from their experiences in the expansion of renewable energies and in ensuring public acceptance of large infrastructure projects.
Therefore the IASS and the Nordic embassies in Berlin organised an international conference "The Energiewende - is there a Nordic Way?" on 15-16 October. Federal Minister for the Environment, Peter Altmaier opened the conference with a keynote on the international significance of the German Energiewende, further speakers and experts included Paavo Lipponen (former Prime Minister of Finland), Leiv Lunde (Director of the Norwegian Fridtjof Nansen Institute), Dr. Günter Bachmann (Secretary General of the German Council for Sustainable Development and Senior Advisor of TPEC at the IASS) and Professor Dr. Ferdi Schüth (Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung).
In the panel discussions experts from the fields of policy, science, industry and civil society from all six countries debated possibilities for transnational cooperation and the role of future innovations in energy policy. In the parallel workshops of the second day participants discussed future-oriented approaches towards the energy systems as well as participatory methods to improve civic engagement. In total, over 130 participants were present at the conference, many more followed the live-streamed broadcast on the IASS website.
