Headline: IASS Mourns the Loss of Clemens Appel

With sadness the team at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) shares the news of the passing of our former Administrative Director, Clemens Appel.

As the Director of the Brandenburg State Chancellery, Clemens Appel played a key role in securing premises for the newly established IASS in 2009. It is thanks to his efforts that the Institute operates today from the Kleist Villa and the former premises of the Federal Bank, two buildings administered by the State of Brandenburg. Mr Appel crossed paths with the Institute again in 2016, when he was asked to take on the role of Administrative Director at the IASS on an interim basis and to support efforts to fill this vacancy permanently. The reform of the Institute's administrative processes initiated during his tenure (2016-17) continues to benefit the Institute today.

Clemens Appel was a much-loved colleague and leader, whose commitment to ensuring the well-being of staff and the success of the Institute were outstanding. He continued to advise the Institute and its leadership team well beyond the term of his appointment.

Clemens Appel passed away on 11 January 2021 after a long illness.
He will be missed by everyone at the IASS and our thoughts are with his family.
