Challenging global citizen deliberation: towards plurinational futures

Epistemic plurality and lived experience are the cornerstones of global deliberation. In an increasingly interconnected world, global citizens’ assemblies can offer the tools to bring together individuals ‘from all walks of life’. Yet, little has been said or done in terms of ensuring the proper inclusion and representation of indigenous peoples in citizens’ assemblies, although their voices remain underrepresented at many stages of governance, including global and multinational institutions. This Essay reflects on the epistemic and normative foundations of indigenous participation in global deliberation and invites reflection over different strategies of connection across ‘contemporary peoples’.
